2019 Football Week 10
Silver Creek's 42-14 loss at East Central was no surprise as Indiana's football playoffs began back on Friday. Only the slightest bit surprising was Providence's narrow 14-8 victory at Clarksville. But the biggest surprise in that opening round, at least within southern Indiana, happened in Charlestown. The Pirates hosted unbeaten Brownstown Central and came away with a big upset in a low-scoring 7-6 victory that saw all of its scoring happen in the first 2 minutes. It started with none other than Charlestown's Marion Lukes on a 47-yard touchdown sprint in the game's first play, with kicker Preston Sweeney converting the point after. On the Braves' third play, Braeden Walker got a 17-yard touchdown carry, but the extra-point kicked went under the crossbar, which proved to be the difference as both teams took chances on 4th down and missed several times.
The Pirates now have to deal with 9-1 Lawrenceburg this Friday in the 3A-Sec. 31 semifinal, while Providence travels to Eastern (Pekin) in the 2A-Sec. 39 semis. The Musketeers, winless during the season, shut out equally-winless Union Co. 22-0 to advance.
Meanwhile, with the playoffs in Kentucky practically set following Friday's action, here's what they will look like for November 8 with Louisville and Lexington area teams:
1A-District 2 (pending tiebreaker resolution): Ft. Knox at Holy Cross + Campbellsville at Bethlehem
1A-District 3: Berea at KCD + Eminence at Frankfort
2A-District 4: Washington Co. at Lexington Christian + Danville at Somerset
3A-District 4: Western Hills at DeSales + Mercer Co. at CAL
4A-District 3: Valley at Moore + John Hardin at Spencer Co.
4A-District 4: Waggener at Franklin Co. + Shelby Co. at Central
4A-District 5: Anderson Co. at Boyle Co. + Bourbon Co. at Lexington Catholic
5A-District 3: Iroquois at Fairdale + Doss at Bullitt Central
5A-District 4: Atherton at S. Oldham + J'town at N. Bullitt
5A-District 6: Great Crossing at Douglass + Montgomery Co. at Scott Co.
6A-District 3: PRP at Manual + Butler at St. X
6A-District 4: Southern at Male + Bullitt East at Fern Creek
6A-DIstrict 5: Marshall Co. at Trinity + Eastern at Ballard
6A-District 7: Henry Clay at Tates Creek + Lafayette at Dunbar
6A-District 8: Madison Central at GRC + Bryan Station at Oldham Co.
I'm thinking that the likeliest area teams to come out of the first two rounds will be Holy Cross, KCD, DeSales, Moore, Fairdale, S. Oldham, Tates Creek and Trinity. The more competitive matchups on Nov. 15 would be Somerset at Lexington Christian; Central at Franklin Co.; Lexington Catholic at Boyle Co.; Scott Co. at Douglass; St. X at Manual; Fern Creek at Male; and Oldham Co. at GRC. As for this Friday, we got three exciting broadcasts, including an Indiana playoff game, on our schedule. You can check out the details by clicking "This Week" at GLICOD.com.
