2020 Football Week 14 + Kentucky 1st Round
As a coronavirus wave delayed the KHSAA football playoffs to Friday, more than 10% of the teams that qualified opted out because of that reason. As a result, teams like Male, Manual, Trinity, Lexington Catholic and Lexington Christian took an extra week off and prepared for an after-Thanksgiving second round. The games that did take place on Friday were quite the mixed bag. On one end, you had St. Xavier registering a 37-0 shutout of PRP in 6A-District 3, while South Oldham won going away in a 5A-District 4 matchup, 36-6 over Jeffersontown. In Lexington, Douglass had a blowout as well, as they defeated Great Crossing 62-21 in the 5A-District 6 semifinals. Dane Key set the tone for that game with a 77-yard touchdown return of the opening kickoff. But that was just the warmup for their big district title game next Friday at Scott Co.
Down the road, in Winchester, GRC was without their top talent in Azariah Israel in the 6A-District 8 semifinals as Oldham Co. registered a 31-21 victory. The Colonels travel to Bryan Station Friday, who survived a scare at home against Madison Central. The Defenders' 14-13 win came down to a bad snap on the extra-point try following an Indians TD with 2 minutes left.
Back in Lexington, Dunbar and Henry Clay will face each other Friday for the 6A-District 7 title. The Bulldogs got a 23-20 win over Tates Creek, while the Blue Devils defeated their crosstown rivals the Generals by a 31-13 count.
One of the closest games in the 3A first round, and perhaps the closest in Louisville that Friday, was CAL's 7-3 victory at DeSales. The big moment in that low-scoring affair came late in the 1st quarter, as Centurions running back Easton Messer scored a touchdown from 59 yards out.
So as second round action comes up on November 27, there will be a lot of big rematches for district titles, like Somerset at Lexington Christian in 2A-District 3, CAL at Mercer Co. in 3A-District 4, and Lexington Catholic at Boyle Co. in 4A-District 5. Also, St. X plays at Manual for the 6A-District 3 championship despite their regular season matchup having been called off due to Covid-19.
Plus, in addition to Oldham Co. at Bryan Station and Scott Co. at Douglass, we'll have live coverage of Bullitt East at Male in 6A-District 4 plus either S. Oldham at N. Bullitt in 5A-District 3 or Franklin Co. at Central in 4A-District 4.
