2020 Football Week 2 Recap
While many parts of Southern Indiana received remnants of Hurricane Laura, at least Week 2 didn't have all the lightning-filled disruptions of Week 1. But it did have more than enough action to go around. First, Silver Creek barely mustered a 7-0 halftime lead on Friday against Salem before turning on the second-half afterburners, with touchdown runs by Trey Schoen, LaShun Mays and Ben Landers, to win going away, 28-8.
The debut of new Providence head coach Dan McDonald saw the Pioneers get shut out 42-0 at Floyd Central in one of our broadcasts. Three of the Highlanders' six touchdowns came on passes from Tristan Polk to Kaleb Quenichet, while star running back Wenkers Wright added to his value with 125 more yards and 2 more rushing touchdowns.
Clarksville ran away with it at Eastern (Pekin), as a 48-8 win gave the Generals their best start since 2014. The scoring was headlined by Keyshawn Minor throwing 3 touchdown passes, Robert Lamar adding a couple more on the ground, and a 50-yard pick-6 from Jake Cummings.
Clarksville will try to reach 3-0 for the 1st time since 2006 when they host Charlestown this week. The Pirates went to 0-2 after losing 42-7 at Brownstown Central. Pirates QB Chase Benner's 34-yard TD pass to Matt Henning tied that game at 7 late in the 1st quarter before the Braves went on their 35-point roll.
Over in Seymour, Jeffersonville's 28-7 win over the Owls was very much a special-teams effort. Two kickoff-return TD's in the first half from Jordan Ferguson (to start the game) and Anthony Mack, followed in the 4th quarter by an 11-yard blocked punt TD from Dave Pratt and an 18-yard fumble recovery on the subsequent kickoff by Davarhy Julian, sealed the victory.
But the closest game of the night was just east of Indianapolis, as Eastern Hancock overcame two 14-point deficits against New Albany in another of our broadcasts. The high-scoring affair came down to Kyondre Winford's touchdown carry from a yard out, followed by Derell Simmons to Ja'raylan Johnson on a 2-point pass play, then a fumble recovery by Austin Firkin during the Royals' kickoff return, to give the Bulldogs a 50-43 victory to go 2-0.
